What to ask yourself before you sell or buy.

Take a moment and consider the following questions. They may help you decide whether this is the lifestyle you want for your future and may also help you choose the retirement village that best suits your needs.

  • Have I fully discussed my decision to enter a retirement village with my family, friends or adviser?

  • Have I sought financial advise regarding the move to a village?

  • Am I able to afford to move into the retirement village, as well as any ongoing associated costs?

  • If I decide to move what is the process and associated costs?

  • Have I considered getting help at my current home with housework, gardening, maintenance etc. rather than move to a village? (if this is the reason for moving).

  • Have I received enough information from and about the retirement village I have chosen?

  • Have I shown the documents to a family member, friend or solicitor?

  • Do I fully understand the contract that I am entering into?

  • Have I asked enough questions about the village to ensure I am sure the village lifestyle (including social activities and religion) will suit me?

  • Have I weighed up my needs and wants moving forward?

  • Have I spoken to some of the residents living in the village?

  • If I am no longer able to live independently will I be able to stay at the village with extra care?

  • Will the unit be suitable if I need a wheelchair or walking aid?

  • If I become in need of higher care what are my options?

  • Does the village provide medical emergency assistance – eg, Call buttons?

  • Will my personal items, furniture fit in the unit?

  • Before I sign the contract, have I received all information relating to the Retirement Villages Act 2016?
